  • From the beginning

    The Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) began life in 1990 administering just two training courses, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). As national demand grew for ACLS courses, within two years, ALSG developed and administered packages for use in other hospitals across the UK. Read more.

    
    In 1993 ALSG became a registered medical education and has commenced an unrivalled journey to become a global leader in influencing and providing innovative life saving training for clinicians responding to medical emergencies.

    ALSG continued to develop new courses aimed at saving the lives of specific patient groups and by 1994 was delivering four course packages across the UK, including the Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS).

    
    With the RCPCH and the NSPCC, ALSG has driven the development and implementation of two training programmes in child protection: Child Protection Recognition and Response (CPRR) and Child Protection in Practice (CPIP) 2009. A further adaptation of the former included the collaboration with the original three partners and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry.
    

  • 2000 onwards

    In 2007 ALSG collaborated with Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International (MCAI) to develop and deliver a Strengthening Emergency Care (SEC) programme in Developing Nations. ALSG’s success in Gambia has been phenomenal and contributed to a 33% reduction in infant mortality from 2006 to 2010 and from one in seven children under five dying in 2006 to one in 11 dying in 2010*.     From there it was a natural progression to support our armed forces and in particular the military. In collaboration with the military, ALSG adapted the existing Paediatric and Major Incident courses to fulfil the training needs of those deploying to Afghanistan. In 2012 ALSG conducted pre-deployment training with 240 healthcare professionals working in the armed forces and combat medical technicians.

    In 2012 ALSG launched its first ‘non-technical’ skills course – Human Factors (HF). With the recognition of the major role that Human Factors, (or non-technical skills), play in the delivery of safe care, an ALSG special interest group developed a HF programme designed to enhance the skills of experienced instructors to become Human Factor’s Champions on ALSG courses.

    ALSG’s flagship course Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) was updated in 2016 to include the most up-to-date practice in paediatric care. The course considered the October 2015 ILCOR update, trauma consensus 2014/15, NICE, SIGN & Sepsis6 evidence and RCPCH specialty views. The course encapsulates the latest learning technologies and strategies for face-to-face learning and assessment.

  • And now...

    As the NHS fundamentally change the delivery of health and social care, seeing more care delivered in the community, we are continuing our support of patients, families, communities and healthcare professionals with the development of a new SAFE programme. The philosophy of SAFE, to provide safe care closer to home, is underpinned by the necessity for patient-centred care and to better meet the health needs of the future.

    With the increase of mental health crisis in an emergency setting at record levels, ALSG along with leading EM and psychiatry clinicians, have developed their latest course - Acute Psychiatric Emergencies (APEx).  Supporting NHS England’s five-year forward view for mental health, APEx provides multi-disciplinary training in the necessary knowledge and skills to care for patients with acute psychiatric and mental health problems.
